ULFA's I-day boycott call will have no impact: Governor

Guwahati, Aug 12: Noting that the law-and-order situation in the state was improving, Assam Governor Shiv Charan Mathur today said there will be no impact of the boycott call given by ULFA on Independence Day celebrations.

"There will be no effect of the boycott call given by the ULFA on the Independence Day celebrations," Mathur told media .

ULFA and three other insurgent groups in the northeast have jointly called for boycott of the celebrations and "general strike" on August 15 throughout the region.

Asked about the measures being taken by the government to foil any attempt by insurgents to disrupt Independence Day functions, Mathur said enough security arrangements have been made for peaceful celebrations across the state.

Mathur, who briefed Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil about the prevailing scene in the state, said the law and order "situation in Assam was improving".

Acting on intelligence warnings, the Centre has already alerted the Assam government to be extra vigilant ahead of Independence Day to avert any violence by the ULFA, which usually creates trouble during national days.

The Home Ministry had advised the state government to intensify security especially around vital installations as ULFA has been targeting these places.
