Centre agree to NRC updation: Gogoi Guwahati, August 22: The government of India has on principle agreed that the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) in Assam should be updated immediately. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said this here on Friday and added that the Assam government had already formed the modalities for facilitating updation of the NRC. The chief minister also took a shot at the opposition parties for allegedly trying to rake up the issue of influx and said, “After 50 years it was me who took up the issue of updation of the NRC seriously with the centre.” Gogoi further pointed out at the Assam’s main opposition party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and said that AGP was in power in the state for two terms. The party (AGP) however, failed to do anything to update the NRC. “We have recently sorted out the modalities for updating the NRC, which would be based on the NRC of 1951.It is the duty of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner (RGCC) to update the NRC,” said Gogoi while addressing a press conference on Friday. “We have presented to the RGCC the modalities which we have sorted out and the RGCC has agreed to our modalities. A pilot project would be started very soon to update the NRC,” the chief minister added. Gogoi further informed that the Assam government is also making efforts to sign an agreement with Bangladesh, so that the neighbouring country accepts the Bangladeshi nationals who would be deported after updation of the NRC. The move came at a time when the state has been witnessing violent reparations in various districts over the illegal influx from Bangladesh. The issue is on the boil in Assam with students’ unions taking initiative to detect suspected Bangladeshi nationals. At least three districts of Assam had witnessed violence over the issue and two persons were killed and several houses were set ablaze in Udalguri, Darrang and Sonitpur districts in last few days over the issue.
