Manuela Schӓr of Switzerland won the Boston Marathon’s women’s wheelchair race on Monday, cruising to her fourth victory in the event.
Schӓr, 37, the defending champion, broke away from the pack early on and kept her lead for the entire race, finishing in 1 hour 41 minutes 8 seconds.
The win extends her list of victories. In 2021 alone, Schӓr won the women’s wheelchair race at the marathons in Boston, Berlin and London. She won four medals at the Tokyo Games in 2020, including one gold.
Schӓr has used a wheelchair since she was 9, after she lost the use of her legs because of an accident on a swing set at a neighbor’s birthday party. Switzerland has dominated wheelchair racing thanks to strong financial support and a long tradition of mentorship.
